The world premiere of Ballet Theatre San Luis Obispo’s epic full-length three act adaptation The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
It is Paris, France of the 1460s. A hunchbacked and hideous-looking little boy is abandoned on Notre Dame Cathedral’s steps, rescued and fostered by a clergyman. A mother’s beautiful, beloved infant daughter is stolen from her home and raised by truands.
Fifteen years later when their paths cross, one simple act of kindness unleashes a whirlwind of love, cruelty, betrayal, prejudice, and hypocrisy.
Theresa Slobodnik’s vision and choreography for Hunchback brings fresh insight to Victor Hugo’s complex characters amidst professionally mounted sets, stunning period costumes, and the compelling storytelling by the dance artists of BT-SLO.
This magnificent production takes audiences on a harrowing journey, from festive celebrations during Paris’s Feast of Fools to the darkness of doomed fates leading to a tragic end.
Choreography and Artistic Direction by Theresa Slobodnik
Music by French Composer Jean-Philippe Rameau
Sets by John Slobodnik
